Q:
May I use the MasterCard Travel Card to make reservations at hotels?
A:
It depends on the hotel. When you make a reservation at a hotel it is called an “open ended transaction.” That means the total amount due is unknown. The hotel has the right to authorize more than the initial payment to cover damages that could occur during your stay. The hotel can place a hold on these funds for up to 15 days. As such, the card may not have sufficient funds to cover additional charges; for this reason some hotels do not accept prepaid cards. Hotels may not accept a prepaid card as a means of pre-authorizing expenditure. We advise that you may use an alternative form of payment to make a reservation and use your MasterCard Travel Card to settle the final bill. Please call the hotel and inquire about their prepaid card policy.
Q:
May I use the MasterCard Travel Card to rent a car?
A:
It depends on the rental agency. When you make a car reservation it’s called an ‘open ended transaction.’ That means the total amount due is unknown. The agency has the right to authorize more than the initial payment to cover fuel refills or damages that occurred during your rental. Car rental agencies may place a hold on these funds for up to 30 days. Sometimes the card will not have sufficient funds to cover additional charges; for this reason some car rental agencies may not accept prepaid cards as a means of making a reservation. However, many agencies may accept prepaid cards to settle the final bill. We recommend you first call the rental agency and inquire about their prepaid card policy.
Q:
May I use the MasterCard Travel Card to purchase gas at the pump?
A:
Yes, but to pay at the pump you must have a minimum $50 balance. If you don’t have a $50 balance your card will be declined. If you want to buy gas with less than a $50 balance, go inside the store and have the cashier enter the amount you would like to purchase.
Q:
May I spend more money than I have?
A:
No. Your card will be accepted only if you have loaded enough money onto the card and it has a balance sufficient to cover your purchase.
Q:

Q:
What is MasterCard PayPass?
A:
MasterCard PayPass is a new “contactless” way to pay for goods and services at point of sale. It’s like having exact change wherever you go.
Q:
How do I Pay with MasterCard PayPass?
A:
To make a purchase, simply tap your PayPass card on the “contactless” payment reader at the checkout. Moments after you tap, you will receive payment confirmation and are on your way. Your signature is not required for purchases under $25 at participating locations. Your PIN may be required for debit transactions.
Q:
How close does the “tap” have to be to the checkout reader?
A:
Typically, at the checkout when you tap your card, it must be within an inch or two of the “contactless symbol” on the payment reader on the counter. If you have more than one PayPass card in your wallet, you should remove the specific card you wish to use to pay.
Q:
Where can I use my MasterCard PayPass?
A:
Anywhere you see the MasterCard
PayPass logo you can tap to pay with your
PayPass card. This includes fast food restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies, movie theaters, and more. Look for the contactless symbol, shown below, on the terminal at checkout to know where to tap your
PayPass card.
If you don’t see the
PayPass logo, your
PayPass card still may be used by swiping it at checkout, just like regular MasterCard cards.
Q:
How do I benefit with MasterCard PayPass?
A:
There are many advantages with
PayPass:
- Eliminates the need for exact change wherever you go
- Security and control because your PayPass card never leaves your hand at checkout
- Better record keeping of all your purchases with PayPass than using cash for incidental purchases
- Ideal at places where speed is essential: movie theaters, fast food restaurants, gas stations and more
Q:
How will purchases appear on my monthly statement?
A:
Purchases made with PayPass will be displayed as on your online statement just like any other purchase you make with a regular card.
Q:
How does MasterCard PayPass work?
A:
PayPass uses a hidden embedded computer chip and radio frequency antennae. After you tap your PayPass at checkout, payment details are sent wirelessly to the MasterCard network.
Q:
Do I have to treat my MasterCard PayPass in any special way?
A:
Treat your PayPass as you would any credit or debit card. Always know where your card is and keep it in a safe place. Check often to make sure none or your cards are missing. And be sure to keep a record of all your card numbers, expiration dates, and emergency phone numbers in a safe place.
A:
There is no battery used to activate your PayPass.
Q:
Do I need to turn it on/off?
A:
No, the PayPass feature on your card does not need to be turned on or off.
Q:
Is MasterCard PayPass Safe?
A:
Yes. With secure encryption technology and Zero Liability protection, PayPass is as safe as a regular card. You are in control – your PayPass never leaves your hands to make a payment. No accidental payments – your PayPass must be extremely close to the reader at checkout to work. No double billing – even if you tap more than once at checkout, you’ll only get billed once for your purchase.
Q:
Why aren’t signatures required for purchases under $25?
A:
To ensure that using PayPass is as simple and convenient as cash, merchants that accept PayPass do not require you to sign for small purchases under $25. However, for your protection, purchases over $25 generally require a signature or PIN to be used.
